The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (earlier called The Indian Cotton Mills’ Federation), the apex body of the textile industry of India, has established a Young Entrepreneurs Group (YEG) in March 2003. The Group comprises young entrepreneurs in the textile industry holding management positions. The objective of the group is to harness the inherited textile knowledge and new ideas and initiatives of the young entrepreneurs in the Industry. The Group provides a forum for interaction between these new players in the Industry and supports the activities of CITI and industry. The Group has members from spinning and composite mills and intends to expand its coverage to include garment manufacturers in the future. The Group has more than 20 members at present.

A lot is happening in the textile industry in India. It has come back from the brink and is ready for the new horizons opening from 2005. CITI has been instrumental in bridging the gap between the policies and the industry’s needs. Its Vision Statement for the Textile Sector has laid down the road map for attaining important milestones in exports, production, capacity building and employment generation. CITI has also been instrumental in changing the perception about the textile sector among the financial institutions and other stakeholders. YEG is a partner in all these endeavors of the Confederation.

The resurgence in the sector is impacting in the CITI-YEG. The membership of the Group has more than doubled since its inception reflecting its growing relevance to the young entrepreneurs in the textile industry.

  The Group has become a constructive medium for interaction among the members on the current market trends, possible challenges before the industry, expectations from the ongoing policy changes, etc. The Group has been inviting experts from different fields to deliberate at the Group meetings on issues relevant to textile industry or general management areas in each of its meetings.

Some of the experts who have addressed the Group so far are Shri Jagdish Hinduja from Gokuldas Images, one of the largest players in the export and domestic market for clothing, Mr. Donald Peck, managing partner of Actis, one of the largest equity investors in India, Mr. Gulu Mirchandani, CMD of the “Onida” brand of televisions in India, Mr. Suresh Lulla, a leading TQM expert and Mr. Harsh Mariwala, CMD, Marico Industries.

  Some of the Suggested Future Programmes and Activities are:  
 
 
StudyTours - Organise Study Tours to important global textile production centres.
Mill Visits - Start with a series of Mill Visits in India to learn from the production practices and management techniques prevalent in mills across the country.
YEG Annual Retreats - A two-day entertainment packed annual programme for members and their families.
Spouse Programmes - Specially designed activities and games for spouses accompanying members to the meetings.

Any entrepreneur less than 40 years of age and holding a management position in a textile unit is eligible to join the Group.

Fee
Each member has to pay an admission fee of Rs. 25,000/- and an annual subscription fee. The annual fee for each year is decided by the Group in its Committee meeting. The fee for 2006-07 is Rs.5000/-.
